What is hopes?__Hops are cone-shaped
flowers and it works as a flavoring agent for beer. There are dozens of
varieties, each with a different flavor and character.
Biology of Hops-
Hops come from the Humulus lupulus plant. As
per biology, Only the female hop plant contains a significant number of
the lupulin glands. The soft resins of the lupulin gland contain alpha
and beta acids. Most of the bitterness comes from the alpha acid. Beta
acids are not as soluble as alpha acids and contribute very little bitterness
to beer, even when boiled.
USES OF HOPS IN BEER-
If you know
about beer and if you know how it brewed, that means you must know about hops…
During the part of the brewing process brewer uses
unhopped malt extract, the boiling process of hops happens after you’ve
dissolved the extract in water. At this point the liquid is called “wort”
and it’s boiled for 1 hour. Once you bring the wort up to a vigorous boil, a
typical all-grain or extract recipe will call for hop additions at different times.
There is a schedule of when to add the hops. A hop schedule always lists the
length of time that the hops should be in the boil, not the amount of time you
should wait to add the hops. The reason hop schedules are written like this is
because the amount of time that hops are boiled changes their flavor.
Without
beer there are some several uses of hops, they are like...
1. When hops are less than 15cm long, can be used for salads or as a garnish for Europian food. Hops flower can use as a privent of savoury biscuits, but just to give a touch because hops are very bitter.
2. Small quantities of hops can be used as an ingredient in herbal teas to aid relaxation.
