Do you know the classification of whisky?


What is whisky?-  Its an alcoholic beverage (Spirit) distilled of a fermented grain like barley, maize or rice or else altogether and it is aged in woods. There are more than 250 brands of whisky available in worldwide.

Word introduction-

 The word whisky (or whiskey) comes from the Classical Gaelic word uisce (or uisge) meaning "water" a geltic language spoken mainly in the highlands and islands of western Scotland. Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae ("water of life").
 The English, Scots, Canadians, spell this drink as WHISKY. The American and the Irish spell the spirit as WHISKEY.


Classification of whisky-

  Classification of whiskys are very interesting....
1. By Ingredients-
(a) Malt whisky:
The dried barley is soaked in warm water for two or three days then it spread on the floor till it sprouts a shoot a thumbnail long. The sprouted barley is constantly turned by hand or by a Saladin machine to aerate it.
(b) Grain whisky:
The whisky is a product of a mixture of malted and unmalted barley which is crusted, fermented and distilled.
2. By composition-

(a) Single malt whisky:

A blend of whisky from different wooden casks and of various ages, but from the same malt distillery is called single malt whisky or pure malt whisky.

(b) Single grain whisky:

A blend of whisky from different wooden casks and of various ages, but from the same grain distillery is called single grain whisky.

 (c) Blended whisky:

This whisky is a blend of both malt and grain.

(d) Blended grain:

This whisky is a blend of Two types grain.

(e) Blended Malt:

This whisky is a blend of  two type malt.

3. By distilation method-

(a) Scottish pot still:

Scottish whisky distilled in a different way. The wooden casks are onion-shaped, but there are significant differences.

(b) Irish pot still:

Irish whiskey made by a single distillery from a mixed mash of malted and unmalted barley distilled in a pot still.

(c) Coffey Still:

Coffey Still was the first commercialized continuous still. It can be run continuously, with pre-heated mash. Coffey Still from Kilbeggan Distillery in County Westmeath in Ireland.

4. By region of product-

(a). Scottish whisky
(b). Bourbon whisky. (Also some Tennesse)
(c). Irish Whisky.
(d). Canadian whisky
         Other major religions include India Japan, Australia, Taiwan
